>> We really appreciate you, no we really doWork ]
ivwshane writes...

"So my company just hit an industry milestone by having 50 million customers.

Just for some background, I originally worked for a company that this new company purchased, luckily I didn't lose my job but my coworkers and I took a minimum of a 30% pay cut:| Employee morale is extremely low on both sides, with many employees looking for jobs elsewhere. Add to that that the feeling going around is that upper management is trying to clean house without laying anyone off (ie a take it or leave it attitude), especially for top performers.

Anyway, to show some appreciation for the hard work we did they (corporate) sent a "celebration kit" to each store. The kit included gift certificates for the store manager to purchase pizza for the store, a cheesy poster, and a "secret gift" for each employee.

A "manual" on how to have the celebration was included and in the manual was one paragraph that referred to the "secret gift". It stated that the "secret gift" was to be given out once the celebration kit was received, it also went on to state that the secret gift is an "appropriate" and "fun" item for the occasion and to be sure that all employees receive it if they are not able to attend the celebration.

So what was this secret gift?

How about a magnet, not just any magnet, it was one that had many faces on it depicting different emotions, like happy, loved, appreciative and so on and it included a little frame to put around a face with the caption, "I feel".

Now maybe I'm over reacting here but I as well as my coworkers pretty much took it as a kick in the face. I mean if they would have left it at just the pizza, things would have been fine but then to build excitement and anticipation over a magnet, just seems like they are patronizing us. We are number one in the industry and we are on the frontlines yet they treat us like a piece of trash. We take a huge pay cut, add a ton of customers and for their appreciation they give us magnets? Wow, way to kick us when we are downPlease post some stories showing me how much your company appreciates you, I'm hoping someone has it worse so I can feel better:p"

>> My Boss is a Lying AssBoss ]
PissedOff&FedUp writes...

"Ok, so my boss of 18 months got fired for being a crack head (which was confirmed after he was fired--his bro's house--where he lived--got raided by the cops for meth). Three months prior to this, he had hired this old buddy of his that had previously worked for our company like 10 years ago. Well, when my old boss got fired, our regional (also an ass--a drunk ass at that--also got fired)manager put this putz in charge (keep in mind that this guys only been back with the company for like 3 months). The ass tells everybody that he knows everything about everything, and procedes to delegate ALL of his responsibility to me and my other co-worker (there's only 3 of us, and a repair guy, who's also worthless). My other co-worker has proclaimed he's not doing ANY of this guys work, so that leaves me holding the bag. There's only so much I can "play dumb" about since I've worked for the company for 3 years +. Plus, this "manager" of mine lies about EVERYTHING---and is on the damn phone the whole eight hours he "works" with his girlfriend. Get this, supposedly his girlfriend is pregnant, right? Well, my other co-worker was working the other night and she called---My co-worker said "congratulations" to her about the baby....she goes, "What baby...I'm not pregnant." BUSTED! I mean, what, did he think we weren't gonna ask to see pictures in 9 months? I mean COME ON! Oh, and he ultimate fights, used to surf the North Shore when he lived in Hawaii (the lived in Hawaii part is at least true--it's been confirmed), once killed a wild boar in Hawaii using only a pocket knife, was a Navy Seal, and played football for Ohio....and the list of lies goes on and on....the guy is 38, balding, looks like a frickin weasel and trust me, doesn't look like he could fight his way out of a paper bag. To top it all off, he's taking credit for all of the work I'm actually doing. I figure if I give him enough rope, he'll hang himself (i.e. I'm not the only one who knows he's a frickin liar--there's a department above us that is our checks and balances kind of thing). That's what happened to my OLD manager. So what, do I just bide my time? Do I tell someone to check his ass? HEEEEEELLLLLP! Thanks!!!! "

>> Just because I can do it, does not mean I shouldFools ]
Happy_Bunny_in_Idaho writes...

"One of my issues deals with my replacement. When I was promoted within the office from Administrative Assistant to Planner, they hired a new person.

The job description of the Administrative Assistant requires excellent verbal and written communication skills. This new person was unable to write a coherent sentence let alone transcribe minutes. So my boss had me continue to do all the old duties because I could get them done. This new person is the stereotypical secretary; she files and paints her nails at her desk (her nails are so long, how can she type???) she will chat on personal phone calls, relying on me answer the phones and help customers that come into the office. She dresses like a teenager, though she is in her 40s. I finally had to corner my boss to ask her to take the mail to the postage machine because she would put mail on my desk for me to mail it out.

I finally complained to my boss and she asked me to type up a list of task that I do, tasks I want to do, and tasks I think the secretary should do. I turned this list into her the very next day. It has been over two months and my boss has not acknowledged that she has read it, although she has verified she has received it. Two weeks ago she started training this Assistant on some of the tasks I had listed that I wanted to do.

So here I am almost two years later, promoted doing all my new job tasks and my old job tasks, just because "I can do it."

>> The Truth Will HurtWork ]

"My General Manager for my last employer (this was just last Friday) wanted me to manipulate a copyrighted stock photo image and use it without the stock photo company's permission. I hadn't known previously it was a stock photo (assumed) but I thought they would have paid for it for the 10 years they had it. So once I found out, I told him I wouldn't use it until I was assured he would settle the license issue, or until another image was found...but I wouldn't use it long-term...just as a placeholder until the issue was resoloved. I also said I wouldn't change the image then, or when the issue was resolved without the copyholders persmission.

So I implied I would quit if he didn't go through with my terms and he says,

"I accept your resignation. I am not doing this because of the image issue, I'm doing this because of your insubordination. As long as you are an employee of this company, you are to obey and do as I say."

Well there is no way in hell I'd do anything illegal and I wouldn't even think covering up for them...so I just told him it was my "professional obligation to refuse his request" and left, and happily called a design agency that wanted to hire me a month previously...they wanted to me start working for them that next week after I left.

And I let the stock photo know And for future reference, if a stock photo company catches you using an image without a license, it's up to 10x the normal fee depending on which company it is ^.^ Not to mention possible court costs, and back fees for 10 years of using that image for all advertising and product packaging (at least a couple hundred thousand...but it could be as high as $800,000) it doesn't hurt just the company, it hurts the photographer because they have a contract/agreements with the company.

Now the ironic thing...I was looking for a better image on 4 major stock photo sites because the GM complained about some fuzziness in the picture and that's how I came across the original picture.

>> Never heard of ENTERBoss ]
Formerly Disgruntled writes...

"A few years ago, I worked at a really wacky (but not so much in a funny way) law firm. One woman, I will call her "Sally" (which was not her real name) was a receptionist for one separate department and her job was to keep the dept.'s calendar. Instead of using any sort of calendar program (and we had Outlook and one other system available), she used Word and set up a job in landscape and just started typing. She wanted something like a table, but not knowing those existed and being unwilling to ask anyone, she just typed a row of underlines first till the program wrapped to the next line, typed a | and then the first date's entry, some spaces to the next | and so on and when she'd get to the end of a line, she didn't know what ENTER meant so she would just hit spaces till it happened on it's own. This was the person (because she was socially very well connected -- GAG) who they chose to have become the bookkeeper for the entire company. After that she had more authority than the rest of us -- she went to their meetings and was allowed to scold us lesser beings afterward for things, for a year was the acting "office manager" and had the authority to search our desks when we'd gone home (how do I know she did it? I came in early and caught her in my desk. No apology. And shortly after they actually called us into a meeting and the senior attorney yelled at us while Sally chuckled, becuase the INSIDES of our desks weren't neat enough... HELLO!) Well, it didn't end there. The new person they hired for the receptionist job tried to edit the "calendar" and of course, it was CRAP. She got in trouble for messing it up and for the next 2 years she was on the job, she had to save all her jobs to diskettes (which Sally chose to call HARD DISKS) because if she'd save anything new, Sally said it would "write over" all of Sally's old stuff. Apart from the fact that that was NOT TRUE, there was never one time that Sally ever needed the stuff that was saved on that computer. No amount of explaining by the new receptionist who was a nice person with at least SOME training and knew better or me, the systems administrator would convince Sally or the attorney in charge that this was not so. And, by the way, Sally bragged to people in other offices in the building that she was going to get me fired and eventually I WAS fired. Only they called it a downsizing, they let me have unemployment and some severance pay (which later downsized folks didn't get as the company continues to flounder -- wonder if it's because their finances are in the hands of the incompetent Sally) and pretty quickly I realized that I was the winner whether they knew it or not because I no longer had to work in the land of the INSANE"

I_must_b_the_dumbass writes...

"My company recently posted approx. 20 new IT positions, the office is located somewhere in the middle of nowhere so its hard to find quality people sometimes. In this case it looks like we ran out of competent applicants around 18 or so. Anyways, I've been solely cross-training this a new guy in my support group on a position I used to hold. He apparently came into the position with Unix, PL/SQL, Java, .Net and web development experience. Some examples that have lead me to the belief that buddy lied on almost everything on his resume:

1) he didn't know how to change directories in unix(or do anything else for that matter)2) he didn't understand the concept of passing a parameter to a program3) he didn't understand the concept of a function ie. pass arguments, it returns values. He was putting random values into the call, not even coming close to the function's signature and couldn't understand why this wasn't going to workout for him. Wasn't this covered in grade 9 computer class?4)He bullshits everything(he used to be a salesman); my boss will ask him questions about stuff that I haven't trained him on yet and he responds like he's been working on it for years. He doesn't say "I don't know or I haven't learned that part of the system yet", instead he will confidently explain how the system really doesn't work. 5)he didn't know how to spool a file or define a cursor in pl/sql6)he reads keywords out of the code when talking to me to make it seem like he understands what is going on but then fully demonstrates that he has no idea. 7)almost forgot this one; he was trying to open a java program and couldn't understand why it was giving him a bunch of jibberish; he was trying to open the .class file ... this wasn't a brain fart either!8)Other than the examples above and the lack of programming he's really just a dumbass.

Because I am the sole person working with him it is difficult to express my experience with buddy to my boss. I did let her know early on there might be difficulties with buddy but I think we both wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. How should I go about getting her to realize this guy is full of it? Should I even bother complaining at all and just let him roast his own nuts? I irks me that this guy is earning 50K+/year and getting away with his deception. What the hell did they ask him in the interview anyways?"

>> You Can Burn To A Crisp For All I Care NowWork ]
Safety Smokey writes...

"Lucky me, I have 2 bosses. One male, a manager; the other female, the team leader. We can call the female: Bitch. We can call the male: Pooky. Why Pooky? Well because up to this point I really thought he was the best manager I ever had! I'm a contractor and I was delegated the job of, let's call it Safety Smokey. The long, tall, blond drink of water in the cubicle next to me thought the job was beneath her so she dumped it on me. I already had 3 other jobs to do (along with 3 other titles) at this job. So I go to the meeting that explains what we (because there are a lot of us) Safety Smokeys are responsible for in our area. Oh, I guess I should say that I work at a company that literally could make a mountain out of a molehill. In fact, they could make a planet, no a galaxy out of a molehill, write a procedure on how to do it, then rewrite the procedure because they didn't like the way the procedure looked......well, you get the idea. So at the meeting, the Smokey Supervisor crams everything into one hour and tells the Smokeys to, pass the news along to your department. I tell Pooky about it and he tells me to tell the group at our next staff meeting. This pleases me. Bitch however, is busy trying to shut me down in every way possible because she doesn't want me getting any recognition because, well who knows what her agenda is. She's just another bitch/psycho in the workforce. Meanwhile I ask Pooky if I can send out an email to the group to let them know what I'm going to discuss and to tell them we are going on a field trip to our Safety area in the event of an emergency. (I'm being brief here.) He says that's a good idea. I send it out. I prepare like crazy: asking questions from the Smokey Supervisors, reading all the Smokey material online and I create some interesting and some amusing stuff in my outline that I was preparing to say in front of the group. I've done some teaching in the past and I knew a few tricks that would help my coworkers remember what to do in the event of an emergency. But I'm no dumb Smokey. I smelled something was up and it smelled like it was coming from the Bitch. I get to work about 15 minutes before the meeting and I see a post-it note on my desk from Bitch that says, You don't have to attend the staff meeting today. Me, seething and thinking to myself, what the F is she talking about. She knows about the email I sent out to the group. She knows I was preparing my talk because she saw me working on it last night. I walked over to one of my colleagues, showed her the note, and said that Pooky told me to give this talk at the staff meeting today. She said to say that to the Bitch. I walked over to the Bitch's cube and I said Pookey said I should give my talk today. ...and I had already sent out an email to the group. Yeah, I saw the email. OK, give the talk. Make it at the beginning and then leave the meeting. WHAT!! What the hell was this about! I was shaking I was so angry. Pookey tells me to make it a short talk: 5 minutes. I was stumbling on my words because I was mad, depressed, pissed off because I didn't want the job in the first place, hurt because I had put a lot of effort into it and flabbergasted because my job as a Smokey was to protect these MF ...ssho...s!!!!! I knew that what I had prepared was very good. One of the things I said was, As your Smokey I have realized that when we stand out in the hallway during a severe weather alert that we are standing next to glass paneling. So, I arranged to have our gathering place changed to a safer area with no glass. OH! They liked that! I had their attention now. In fact, by the time I was done (in 5 minutes or less) they had opened the floor to discuss some of my points. After they made me rush through it, they leisurely debated items I had brought up. The topper though was when Pokey and I met the next day to discuss a project I have to work on for him and he realized that I was mad. He said: The procedures are the most important thing. We can't do anything without the procedures. Why didn't I say, What can you do if you're dead? Funny, I always thought a life was more important than a procedure. Here's a newsflash that I didn't mention to them. When we have our next drill and they ask me stupid questions or leave the building, or talk on the phone and do all the things that they're not supposed to do, I have the authority, no the responsibility from the Supervisor Smokeys, to write them up! And when a real emergency happens I guess I'll just remember to save the people who were kind to me won't I."

>> Big Momma and her underlingsRant ]
Rhiannon writes...

"Greetings fellow prisoners of the paycheck. I work at the same hell of a plastics factory that Dr. Madd does. He informed us all of this website since we all felt the need to rant. My story is mainly one of observation. You see our leading lady in quality control whom I shall call Big Momma has a personality that would be ideal were she in the military. She barks sometimes so loud you can hear her from one side of the plant to the other even over the noise of forklifts, grinders, presses and other general racket. The way she screetches over the intercom is the REAL reason our plant sometimes reccomends ear plugs as personal protective equipment. She has made people cry, quit, and boil over with loathing with her compassionless attitude about simple mistakes, notwithstanding the fact that she makes them too. She even once accidentally tossed a pair of plastic cutters into a scrap plastic grinder. The real tragedy, however, is that the usual kiss ups bow down to her, laugh at her crude humor, and even tolerate it when she insults them to their face. The first one, whom I shall call Brown Nose, was such an obnoxious smart mouth that when Big Momma tried to get her promoted at least half of the press operators went to our supervisor and objected. It was clear if she was to be promoted she would have to be moved to another shift because no one on ours would work under her. Poor Brown Nose did eventually leave our shift with her tail between her legs because everyone hated her. The next person Big Momma backed for promotion was her own mother. (Yes, I know, the neapotism is obvious.) The problem with this is that Big Grandmomma is in such poor health a snail could outrun her. Now I have no objections to old people working, if they can do the job, but Big Momma, that bastion of heart for the elderly, herself once said "Smiles and old people are for Wal-Mart." The poor old creature was soon demoted, but due to the fact that no one wants the job at the moment is attempting it again. There is also Dumb Blond. Big Momma has called her that (Dumb Blond) to her face, and yet she still follows Big Momma and her clique around like a lost puppy hoping someday they will throw her a bone and promote her again. You see she was also once at the top but demoted. To be frank, they hate her, but she will never learn. Give her credit for tenacity. Finally their is Hamster. Now I call her this because she is bascially a cute person, like a Hamster. But take away the fur and the cuteness and like a Hamster she is really just a rodent. (In short a company rat.) Big Momma is always critical of her to her face yet she always runs to Big Momma or some other member of the High Mucky Mucks when she has something to tell. She then tries to smootch it over with smiles and hugs. Frankly I have become immune, but I hope she learns before she ends up as hated and Brown Nose and Dumb Blond. At any rate I have avoided the sordid political pandering these folks do I of that I am very glad. They are the reason this website exists."

>> My first "Office" jobWork ]
On Break writes...

"After college, my fiance convinced me to hang up my waitressing uniform and try getting a real office job where I could learn some of the skills I would need to move up in the world, so that's what I did.

It was a lawn care company and there were three of us working in the office - the owner, the bookkeeper and myself. My job was general office duties, phones and talking to the guys out in the field when they needed to call in and out of their jobs.

I should have known something was up when the owner introduced me to his cats. 2 cats walking around the office plopping their asses on my paperwork and keyboard. I like cats, but not while I'm trying to work. One day, one of the workers found a kitten on the side of the road while he was out doing lawns. He brought it back to the office. Meet cat #3. I was sent to the store that day to buy kitten food, etc.

One day the owner had to be somewhere outside of the office and I was in the office until 7:00 waiting for the cat to take a shit so he could bring it to the vet the following day. This was starting to get crazy.

Next, this asshole plans an anniversary dinner for his parents on THE DAY OF HIS OWN BROTHER'S WEDDING, and who's stuck taking all of the RSVP phone calls? Me. He was also running some political campaign out of his office and guess who was dealing with that mess?

So time goes on, you can't even run down the hall to take a piss because if you don't answer the guys on the radio with 3 seconds, they start screaming "87 TO BASE! 87 TO BASE!" and then the owner knows you aren't at your desk (He used to carry a radio with him when running errands, to listen in).

I don't know if the owner lost his housing at some point or if he even had any, but I came in the office one morning and he came out of one of the larger closets in a pair of shorts but no shirt, scratching his balls and yawning.

The phone calls that came into this office - this guy was a real shady SOB and when he lost a customer, he would have someone go out in a truck with a different company name on it and re-sign them up, so he had three trucks with three different company names, would NOT give out his physical address to any customers, had mail going to three different addresses at a mail place (not a po box but a 'suite') so one day this guy calls and says "Yea, I'm right down the street and I'm stopping in, where are you?" (he had been calling all week trying to get directions to the office) I almost laughed at him on the phone, I felt like saying "You are about 30 minutes off your mark, mister" But I ended up telling him I was in the office alone and would rather not give out that information.

Well, my exit from this job was not graceful or preplanned. After a morning nap, this freak wanders out and tells me he is going to start showing me some accounting functions, would I like a beer? I politely declined the beer (funny because only the week before, he ducked behind cars and crept through the parking lot of a restaurant where he was told one of his lawn guys stopped in once a week for a slice of pizza and a beer - caught him by peeking in the window and fired him that afternoon) and as he started showing me something and had me try it out, I messed it up. He stood up, pushed my work to the ground and screamed "YOU'RE FUCKED UP, you KNOW THAT? YOU'RE REALLY FUCKED UP! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?" I answered "The only fucked up thing I've done is apply for a job here and actually stay for 3 months" and as I headed for the door he screamed "IF YOU WALK OUT THAT DOOR, DON'T EVER COME BACK!" LMFAO, as ifA week later this fleabag shows up at my part time waitressing job and sits at a table in my area and says "Hi! Meet your replacement!" and shows me a cell phone. He then proceeds to walk around the bar area trying to sell these boxes that make a loud noise if you push a button - I guess a device a woman could use to possibly fend off an attacker. I can't believe he showed up there.

A short time later, I got a job with a real company and met a woman who actually worked with him - when she requested benefits, he told her she was healthy and worked in an office sitting down all day, what the hell did she need benefits for? I wonder about this nutjob from time to time."

>> Working like a DogRant ]
Crazy writes...

"Many years ago, I used to work at a pet store that was part of a large west coast chain. I'll never forget the experience. They hired people at minimum wage and expected maximum perfection, but I could deal with that. The problem was the company was run by egos not brains. Upper management would regularly come into the store and demand certain changes be made immediately. We were expected to drop everything and perhaps take all overstock out of the back room and stack it into the isles. Then a few days later, a different person from upper management and yell that he wanted all that crap out of the isles put in the backroom where it belonged! There was no way to reason with any of them and they refused to make any kind of cohesive plan among themselves so we wasted countless hours moving stuff back and forth and getting yelled at.

Then there was the shipping and ordering fiasco. It was all supposed to be computerized, but somehow, we always had extra of some things and none of other very important things like kitten food. Customers would yell at us employees every day that we were STILL out of kitten food and other important products and that they needed it and why wasn't I ordering it! As instructed, every week, I made a list of things we were out of and faxed it to the district manager, but nothing every happened to improve the situation.

Then I got saddled with the job of 'special orders' which is when people want to order something special and I was supposed to compile the list, fax it to the district manager, and then make sure to intercept the items when they came and get them to the customer. Most of the stuff that customers wanted to special order turned out to be stuff that we were supposed to have but were always out of anyway. And none of it ever came in the shipments either. And the customers had me to yell at.

One day, after months of no kitten food, I saw the phone number of the manager of shipping. I was desperate so I called her. She was very nice. I told her my problems and she said she would work on it. And on the very next shipment, we got a huge monstrous pile of kitten food! Then two days later, I got in big trouble for calling her and not going through the district manager which I had been trying to do for 3 months to no avail. Oh well.

Despite that, I was eventually promoted to assistant manager. They made a huge deal out of how much money they would be paying me and how it was more than any other assistant manager was making. How much? They gave me a whopping $7.10/hour. Big deal! And if you want to become a manager, you have to transfer to another store at least 2 hours away from your house. And they will pay you a starting salary of a whole $17,000.00 per year. Not worth it!

Plus I found out later that every time my manager screwed something up (which was often), she would tell the district manager that I did it. I got blamed for stuff even when I wasn't working that day! Of course, she would always smile to my face the entire while she was stabbing me in the back. She would also constantly screw up the schedual and then change it daily to try to fix the screwups, but regularly performing new ones that would have to be fixed. The end result is that you never knew when you were working until the last minute. One time, she changed the schedual on my day off so that the next day, I was supposed to come in at 6AM. Except no one told me! I didn't show or know until they called me and then she blamed it on me and said I must have slept in. Grrr.

Plus my manager could not seem to handle money correctly. Every time she worked, all the register balances would be screwed up. Add to this the issue that we had a theft problem. We'd come up short on her days, but with no way to tell who had taken the money since all the registers were unbalanced. The district manager was putting pressure on my manager to do something, so what did my manager do? She picked someone at random and wrote her up for theft, even though she had no evidence. This person was one of our best workers and she was pissed and immediately quit. Who can blame her! The real thief was caught some months later in a sting operation by company security.

ANother 'fun' story: One day, my manager asked me if I would be willing to work overtime at night watching the store while some construction workers remodeled the back room. She begged and I relented. She said I would only need to hang around to lock up the store and make sure they didn't steal anything. But when I arrived, she gave me a laundry list of things to work on and she wanted em done by first thing in the morning. I was a bit irked but agreed to work on the projects.

While I was working, the construction guys told me that I really shouldn't be in the store without a respirator when they were working. I told them I had to do all these projects. Then they told me the reason they were there was to remove asbestos! Now I was pissed! I waited outside and it was a cold winter night! In the morning, I asked the manager why she hadn't told me that they were removing asbestos and she said she was sure she had told me and that I must have forgotten. BS!!!!Anyway, those were just a few of many stories from the pet store from hell. One of the smartest things I ever did was quit working for those people. Every place has it's politics, but that place was just rotten to the core"

Suddenly the cashier got livid and fumed, "But that's not fair, sir! I'm working a double today. You're supposed to give me one hour."

>> My bosses are dickheadsBoss ]
DeliGirl writes...

"So, this lady opened a new deli in town with her husband. She comes into my work (cashiering at a local supermarket) and tells me how she would just LOVE to have someone with my customer service skills working at her deli, and offers me a job, knowing I have had no previous deli/food service experience.

She seems super nice, and offered me more money than I was making, AND better hours, so I quit my job to go and work for her.

Well, this bloody deli has absolutely NO systems for anything. No numbered tables, no system for knowing where the customers food/drinks go, and the POOREST department managing I have ever seen.

Originally, I was to "be up front, dealing with customers, taking orders and making hot/cold beverages", but it ends up, that I am the ONLY person doing all of this, PLUS delivering food, clearing tables, etc etc. I am doing the work of THREE people. The deli has both upstairs and downstairs seating, so I have to run up and down all day long, shouting out "Who has the [insert order description here]?" and hope someone responds.

A customer asked me the other day, "Are you all on your own??", after watching me run up and down the stairs about 15x. I said "Yeah, seems like it.." She said that if she were me, she'd walk right out the door and tell my bosses to stuff it.Good advice.

Anyway, all day long, as I am running around, dripping with sweat, I get to hear both of my bosses yelling "You need to go faster!!! FASTER!!!" I swear, the next time I hear that, I am going to drop my tray of food platters and punch them in their f***ing face. A few days ago, I arrived 10 minutes early. As I walked in the front door, my boss walked by and instead of saying "good morning" he said "Hurry!!! Hurry!!! Get to work!" F*** you, assface. Let me at least take off my jacket and put on my apron before you start shouting shit at me. Not a good way to start my shift...

Both bosses seem to have an attitude toward me for some reason, like I am some sort of idiot. I never hear anything positive come out of their fat f***ing mouths EVER. All they do is point out what I am doing WRONG. And most of the time, it has nothing to do with me at all, its something someone else did, but I am the closest one, so they take it out on me. (I always admit when I make mistakes at work, and appologise.) When I explain that it was someone elses deal, or even if that person speaks up and says, "No, that was me who did that", they just walk away from me and have NEVER appologised for being wrong, or embarrassing me in front of customers. I have had verbal bollockings about stupid shit while taking customer's orders. Like: "Did the last people want cold or warm milk with their coffee?!" I'll say "They ordered it black, so I assumed they didn't want ANY." Then he'll say, loudly and rudely, "HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE TO ASK EVERY PERSON IF THEY WANT MILK WITH THEIR COFFEE???!!!" Like its such a big f***ing deal, Christ.. just bring a bit on the side when you deliver the bloody drinks, and bring it back down here if they don't want it, jeesh!!! Calm the F*** down already and be a bit more professional.

Luckily, my customers always compliment me on my service often, so I haven't lost it on anyone yet. Bless them..

Oh, and the other thing that pisses me off... These bosses bitch all day long, and make me feel shitty, then, out of nowhere, they'll bust into a line of some stupid ass song like "Chattanooga Choo-choo" or some shit. Then they will turn to me and say "Is there something wrong? You look a little down.." Like their stupid f***ing song is supposed to cheer me up and make everything okay.

They are just asking for a slap, I swear... f***ing crazy tw*ts.

They hired me because of my customer service skills, and normally cheery attitude, but yet make it nearly impossible to smile and be outgoing because of their shitty attitudes.

*sigh*

I'd quit, but I live in a small town, and there isn't much work available here without an hour commute. Still checking the Job Centre a couple of times a week, in case something better comes up...wish me luck!"

kbell writes...

"I work as a pharmacy technician in Ohio. My boss decided that she was overworking me (could it have been the fact that I was at work for about 12 hours a day 5 days a week?) so she decided to hire someone to help me out.

I thought this would be great! Thinking that since I would have some help, I would get out of work on time (normally 9 hours) and be able to actually finish a project instead of starting 10 different things and taking forever to finish all of them.

My boss hired a woman, paid her as much as I am making, and does not know how to do anything! She answers the phones, but still makes me talk to everyone who calls. She also alphabetizes patient profiles for me....some are alphabetized by the patients last name, some are by the first name. I hope I am not the only one who thinks that that absolutely makes no sense at all.

She also is trying to help me on the computer. The first 2-3 weeks of teaching her how to use a keyboard was EXTREMELY frustrating. I thought she would atleast be able to read the keys. I told her to press the tab button once, She asked me "Which one is the tab button?" I told her...do you see the one that says T-A-B on it? that is the tab button.

So, she thought I was being mean to her and everything because I told her one day that I have to get my own work done before I can show her how to use the keyboard.

The next day, her sister..who is about 50 years old came into work and started SCREAMING at me! She said that my parents must not have taught me to "respect my elders"! (The woman my boss hired is about 50 years old). She yelled at my for about 30 minutes.

Then my boss came in and she acted like she didnt do anything. My boss then told her that we were going to cut her sisters hours from 6 hours a day to 4 hours and that another person in the office who gets paid atleast 4 times more than me gets to teach her how to use they keyboard.

I hope I am not the only one who has experienced this amount of STUPIDITY at work. Who has ever heard of someone's sister coming into her workplace and yelling at a co-worker. Atleast my boss believed me and knew that I wasnt doing anything mean or hurtful to the other woman."

I feel like I am 12 years old now, because every day now he sits beside me and makes me change his emails. I know how to type and It really bothers me having someone telling me I don't click or delete properly.

"I have a jealous co-worker who I though was my friend until I found she was horribly bashing me to the other four people in the office and clients that I have to work with. Every day begins whit her ratings about how miserable she is, how miserable everything is. How underpaid and under appreciated she is. This is a woman that will complain for an hour about the sun rising. And how everyone is out to get her and damn the phone just rings to spite her. So she decided to stop working…for months. She just sat there and complained. I reached the point where I couldn't take it anymore and I withdrew. She noticed and began to complain about her clients and how I was always getting extra help on campaigns. For the record she never asked for it, she was to busy bitching. So I became to feel very alone in an office full of people that don't like me because of her backstabbing. And you know I never confronted her about it or anyone, and I was so alone and tired in dealing with her that I began to vent to a friend my feeling…via e-mail. I was never as cruel as she would tell you. I vented my frustrations about her magazines lying all over our shared workspace and it made me look just as bad. Recently she was busted for *shock* gasp* NOT WORKING and was placed on probation at the same time the powers that be gave me cart blanche to make a presentation to an important client with out her. While I was out of the office she was asked to retrieve some client information and decided to use my computer. Where upon she snooped. I mean she had to dig and found an e-mail that I had written where I said I couldn't take her complaining anymore and the fact that she was like talking to a brick wall when she was engrossed in her mags was so rude. I had also ranted about another big opportunity I was proud of and she was not supposed to be told about. Anyway, I can only guess she thought this was proof I busted her out about not working...truth is I want to tell. But darn our clients and even her cohorts who were sick of picking up her slack had complained not me. Anyway, she decided to break into a full fledged crying fit that I was a backstabber and I didn't work on anything and that I'd push my work off on to her and why should she get into trouble. Anyway, my boss called me and gave me a heads up before returning to the office. I was mad. I told my boss that yes I probably had a e-mail where I vented, yes I was completely unprofessional and was pissed that she was so wrong to be snooping and that it was her own fault to find something she didn't like. While upper management didn't disagree, no one could prove or necessarily disprove the claims, thank s to her we know risk both of us loosing our office. To top it off she is pretending like nothing happened! I don't think she knows that I know. Regardless she doesn't try to hid the fact that she discovered something because her and the other office crony (who does the same amount of nothing and hasn't been caught) were having heated exchange over the lunch table about people that are backstabbers. You could of dropped pin and no one would of stopped staring at me. I wanted nothing more than to tell them to shove it. I work and go to school. They sit all day and go home. I'm proud I'm trying to be successful and they keep trying to sabotage me. Management is so fed up over the hearsay they rather penalize both of us as to not show favoritism. The job market sucks and I'm really considering battling unemployment just so I can tell her off. I'm so lost and don't were to go from here. I just know I don't think I can stand playing so nicely anymore whith such venomous people."

>> Micromanager Boss Who Likes to Sabotage Careers (and lives)Boss ]
BC writes...

"I used to work at a hospital charity in Saskatoon, Canada where everything appeared to be fine, other than the control freak executive director.

As I haved moved on, I have become a manager myself and have seen how poor she really was, and how much she only cared about herself and her own reputation. She was an unbelievable micromanager, re-doing anything her people put in front of her (which was everything, as she demanded to have final say on anything). She gave little or no leadership, and had people pitted against eachother, beleiving what was her fault was really theirs. This has been true for the last 15 years, and every person who has worked for her would have a similar story to mine.

I can understand wanting a job done well and done right, but you have to let your employees take responsibility and feel like they are contributing. You have to give them space to breathe and feel like they are not constantly doing something wrong. Right now, I hear from a friend that of the four employees left, all four are looking for new jobs, and one has given their notice. I have even heard that one employee has listed her as a reference, which she said she was OK with, and then gave this person bad references just to keep them at there (which is why I didn't put her on my resume).

I don't know why she is so vindictive to her people or why she can't recognize that their lives are just as important as her ambitions. Her micromanaging style combined with her generally cold nature towards her staff make them less confident and disinterested in their jobs. She's bleeding people, she just doesn't realize it, or she refuses to care. I even heard she doesn't even want to be there anymore, but I guess she can't live without having scared people under her thumb.

She's so competitive with the other hospitals in the city that she can't see past this. I really don't think she cares about anything other than being considered the top fundraiser and chairing her professional organization. She's lost touch with her employees and many good people on her board, and has alienated the charity from the administration of the hospital. But, lucky for her, there are enough religious people around the area that will continue to give to the hospital, no matter who is in charge.

I hoped she was a good person when I started, but I found out she was a psychotic control freak. Maybe when all her people quit on her she (or her figure-head board of directors) will realize her style doesn't work, and that she's destroying lives."

Why Don't You Kill Me writes...

"You've got to hand it to them for keeping me in the dark for two years, but the way information travels in a small office, they couldn't possibly believe I'd be oblivious forever.

I work as a sales assistant in a brokerage firm. "Sales assistant" isn't exactly an accurate job description, since I do everything. IT worker, supervisor, trainer, diplomat, accountant, project manager, graphic designer, editor, fall guy - note that all of these jobs pay at least twice what I make - those would be more appropriate titles for my position. There isn't a task in this office that I haven't done. Not one. And I've always done it cheerfully, despite having 3 years of prior experience and being paid an entry-level salary. I believed, until recently, that my work ethic and good attitude would eventually pay off.

Then I learned the sad truth.

The president's son - he's also a sales assistant - has repeatedly pulled stunts that would have gotten me fired in less than the time it takes light to travel across the room. These antics include but are not limited to: provoking a sexual harassment lawsuit against the firm and dating the chairman's daughter-in-law while she was still married to his son (this was after we rewrote the company policy to forbid dating among co-workers when a relationship between him and the receptionist ended in disaster). The other day, I was out for lunch with him, and we were talking about our lack of funds to do the things we wanted to do in life - a common problem, I guess, and we're the same age so I thought we might be in the same boat - and he casually mentioned how much he made last year. I carefully picked my jaw up off the floor, swallowed a few times, and pretended that his revelation hadn't shaken me to my very core. I make an average wage. He makes more than twice what I make. To do the exact same job. In addition, Daddy gave him a condo. This guy had the nerve to tell me he's broke.

The very next day, I found out through the duties I share with the office manager that the sweet but dumb-as-a-post chairman's daughter is being tossed 6 Gs a month for doing such a stupendous job. You see, about a year ago, we hired her. She's a sweet girl. But she can't do my job. Despite a year of training, she isn't half the sales assistant I was after 6 months. I've saved accounts that she's screwed up. I've covered for her when her brainpower couldn't keep up with her workload. And she got rewarded for it. Oh yeah - Daddy gave her a condo too. That means she's now clearing about 3 times as much as me for doing a crappy job.

I'm looking for a job now, and before I leave I'm sitting down with the owners to tell them just what I think about their compensation and hiring policies. I can't wait."

I have other things to do.

While I was reconciling our latest bankstatement, I noticed that there were several checks that have been cashed but were voided out in the system. What a dumb ass. The dumb ass had called the places that had received the checks and asked them not to cash the checks. That the checks were written in error (by my dumb ass boss)and to send them back to us. amazing days at work.... ahhh yes writes...

"Ohhhh yes, let me begin. I could run this company, it is ridiculous. The way things are set up here, it is going to fail without a doubt in my mind. It is a sick joke, I seriously think a Kindergarten teacher had a class project to set up a company and they created this.

So let me begin my sad tale...So I started here as a temp then I became the receptionist and I moved up to the accounting department, and now I am doing some IT work... this is all within 1.5 years (shortened version....) and so, it obvious that I have the skills to multi-task and get things done, otherwise they would not keep adding to my plate and promoting me. Ok so I am blond, and the youngest one here, but people here try and tell me that I'm dumb. That's funny last time I checked when you needed something I always know how to do it for you and help you.... I help people here so much, and they now expect me to stop what I am doing to help them at their every whim. Im sorry haha that's right I don't have any work to do, I am your personal servant. I guess I should add that to my job title.

So now they are making rules that apply to me and me only. Like I get shorter breaks, and I have to just "deal". AND I SWEAR.... they have no common sense. Its like they crawled out of a hole and know nothing. And they have the audacity to tell me I am not a team player.... I think the mace is a good idea. so I was listening to this cd, and my coworker comes over and says to me... and i quote them "so how many times are we going to listen to this cd? im really sick of it."Ok yeah so I repeated the cd a few times, sue me. I didn't know it was sooo loud as to bother you so much you had to come over and say it like that, and I seriously didn't say anything back to them because I knew that I would throw an f-bomb in there to liven things up a bit. you know its like any office rules other companies have, we throw out the window here. i mean i would never in a million years say something like that to someone, I would say something like... "do you mind turning your radio down?" and that's all............... i guess i have built up anger... ?

But its like at least 555895 times a day people bother me with things they want done asap, and I cannot always do that... I mean I help as much as I can but there is only so much I can do.

SERIOUSLY WHAT SHOULD I DO? How can I let them know I need my space without stepping on any toes?"

For the most part, it's great, however I have a partner (whom I've nicknamed Phlegmenstein) whom I work very close with and I hate to say this- But he drives me nutsFirst of all he doesn't speak English, and when I type this, I don't mean that he has a thick accent- This guy knows maybe ten words of the entire English language. When he does speak English it's like an aural nightmare; most of what he says ends up sounding like some incoherent gurgling or clicking sound. It wouldn't be so bad if he could fully understand what I'm saying, but he doesn't. I have to perpetually dumb myself down to the intellect of a cave man to get through to this guy.

It also wouldn't be so bad if this man didn't boss me around every half a minute! He's always coming up with these half brained solutions to our problems (he's supposed to be educated in the IT department but he doesn't even know what a BACKSLASH or RAM is!)We sometimes run into problems with the software that we use and he makes these wacky assumptions about how the programs work and then he proceeds to get me to do some things that are potentially disastrous. I can't tell him "No, this isn't a good idea because..." Because he just doesn't understand me! He doesn't know anything! If I point out his mistakes he becomes extremely beligerent and even more bossy.Another thing, he always comes to work even if he's sick. Even worse, when he does come to work, he insists on breathing though his nose even though his sinuses are clearly blocked. For the past week, I've had to hear every three minutes the sound of mucous building up and then being blown down by a forced breath. Blow your nose, or breathe through your mouth! It's disgusting.

One good thing about him is that he's very outgoing, he has no qualms about asking people for help and he greets everyone with the utmost friendliness (even though there's only two recognizable english words for every minute that he talks).I don't mean to be offensive to anyone who can't speak English that well, it's more the combination of him being incoherent, bossy, and yucky that really gets on my nerves."

"I work in a shipping department. Because we are small company I am the only one around to deal with sales reps during the night hours. I've heard various excuses and problems from every rep I work with but last week I got the kicker.

Our system is simple. If you send through an order and then send another for the same customer they will combine to make one big order. Two days ago I had a sales rep call to ask me if her orders had combined. You see, she had "intended" one to be sent on a different ship date and she was wondering if the computer would know that. Apparently our computers are supposed to have a built in "intention" reader. I looked it up and sure enough her order had combined. I went through and fixed her mistake and explained to her that she had to send through the order for the different ship date again. She then asks me if she has to change the ship date or if the computer will know that it should be for the next ship date because there is already an order in the system.

I'm sorry, but wasn't that the orginal problem? Was I not clear on how orders with the same ship date will combine no matter what the "intent" is?"

When he started he told everyone what a computer guru he was, how he used to design systems as a consultant before he started working with me.I shortly learned that consultant meant temp, systems meant databases and design meant create. Not at all meaning to detract from the skill of other very good database designers, but about 6 weeks after I borrowed a book from the local library called access for dummies I knew more than he did about databases.About 8 months ago I played a prank on him as I was sick of hearing about him being a computer guru. I took a snapshot of his desktop and pasted it into MS Paint, set that as his wallpaper and hid all his icons. The other day I found out that the IT guy had been at his computer to fix his icons. For 8 months this computer guru was using the start button to launch all his programs and hadn't been able to fix it."

"For almost three years I put up with a loud mouth babboon, who talked all day long, she went to almost everyone's cube and repeated the same stories (different version each time) over and over again, he voice was so loud and piercing! The stupidvisors just acting like she was the best employee of the decade, she missed 12 days of work (since Jan. of this year), took 1/2 to hr breaks, long lunches and if she was at her desk, she was screaming profanities at her poor husband who really must love torment. She is gone, gone, gone.....there is a God and prayer does work

"About 4 years ago I moved from the big city to work in a small town law firm. Upon coming here, it was advised of me that one of my coworkers was a bit....well..strange shall we say. How bad could it be was the question? Well little did I know.

The woman was completely and utterly loonie tunes, not to mention a total idiot. She had been there for 6 years and still had no idea how the computer systems and email systems worked (which were basis Office 97). The poor woman also was under the rather mental fantasy that she was highly intelligent and the rest of us should 'follow in her footsteps' - not only workwise but religious wise as she was ultra-Catholic. Now, I'm all for freedom of religion - however being a zealot and giving your coworkers hour long lectures on how they are heathens and it was her duty to save your souls because your were living your life in a sinful way was a bit much.

The poor woman was so consumed by jealousy that my bosses liked her over me that she began to stalk me, my friends and my work. She also spent a great deal of time attempting to sabatoge things - unfortunately for her she wasn't that good at it, especially since she didn't have a clue what she was doing in the first place.

She harassed clients who were friends with me, called my friend at home to tell them that she found it offensive they were friends with me and that I was a sinner, she called me at home about a total of 30 times in two years - mainly to ask how to reboot the computer. She also wrote me emails telling me that I should 'go back to God and cease my sinful life' and listens into my personal conversations - writing down what I say and then making an 'analysis' of it. She wrote down my system settings on my computer because they were 'offensive' to her and basically told my bosses a bunch of nonsense to attempt to get me in trouble. Which of course they ignored and laughed at.

When my friends and the clients clued into this entertainment - she became rather infamous for missing a few marbles. She promptly threatened to have me sued for 'slander' because I was spreading lies about her. The woman truly thought that we were supposed to take her seriously - I asked her how was it slander when she was the one who contacted my friends and clients..not me.... and we could prove her antics?

Things have now slowed down and we simply laugh at her - she seems to have either gone to ground or is simply thinking up some other crazy thing to do. She has threatened to report me to my bosses and make me cry several times - she is apparently under a fantasy that they take her seriously.

I am scared.

Truly."
